Casey Meraz: Here are three ways that law firms can build backlinks for their websites.

There’s a lot of different backlink methods out there, but foundationally let’s start with number one, directories. So, directories are important if they’re relevant for your share of search, meaning what other directory websites are ranking for when somebody is typing in “personal injury attorney,” or whatever type of practice that you have in your market? And if there’s other websites ranking there that you’re not listed on, you need to get on those and be on the top of those. Those are the only directories that I think that are important and it varies market by market, city by city. So, do some Google searches in your area and see who ranks.

Number two, creating studies and statistics. Maybe you can interview past clients. Or maybe you can, if you’re a personal injury lawyer, collect local traffic data and create a study off of that. Take that data, maybe put it into something more visual, like an infographic, or a video, something that people can share and put that on your website. People will use that. Journalists will use it whenever it’s relevant, when they’re looking for supporting data. If you go through the effort to put that data together, that’s just huge. People, always love reference material like that.

And three, scholarship programs. As a local law firm, you can offer a scholarship to students and, say, “Hey, I’ll give you $1,000 a semester. Here’s the criteria of how you’re going to apply. My law firm is going to award this,” but basically then you pitch that to schools. For law firms, I suggest pitching this to law schools. So, law schools have websites and they have pages where they link to external scholarships, ask them to list you there, give them the information they need and, more than likely, they will.

So, those are three interesting and pretty easy ways to get backlinks.
